HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team put together a strong performance on the opening day of the Cougar Fall Classic at Hoff Courts Friday afternoon.
The Cougars started the day with five singles victories against Louisiana Tech in hidden dual action.
"We're one of the stronger teams out here," head coach John Severence said. "It's good for us to get a couple of wins under our belt and show the depth of our team. We're solid up and down the line up."
Kami Miller, Sonja Nikolic and Vicky Simpson notched straight sets wins, dropping only four games between them. At No. 6 singes, Simpson rolled to a double bagel victory, while Miller dropped only one game in the first set.
Loli Gomez and Briana Bateup also added singles wins as each of their opponents retired with injuries. Gomez was up 5-2 in the first set, and Bateup was ahead 6-2, 3-0 when play was stopped.
Houston finished the day taking all three doubles matches from Lee College. The Cougars changed up the doubles pairs from last week at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regionals.
Gomez and Yolandi Terblance charged past Shelby Grepper and Kristina Vucenov, 8-1 in the No. 2 slot. Tiffany McLaughlin and Sarah Reimer took the final five games in the No. 3 spot for an 8-3 win, while Nikolic and Bateup capped the day in the No. 1 hole with a gritty 9-7 victory over Stacy Lish and Ana Vidic.
"Number two really spoke for itself out there," Severence said. "I also like our pairing at number one. They played well tactilely. They just have to learn to finish points."
Houston continues action tomorrow afternoon against Conference USA foe, UTEP, at noon in singles action. The Cougars conclude the afternoon with a pair of doubles matches against Tyler and Louisiana-Lafayette.
"I'm looking forward to tomorrow's action," Severence said. "We'll do fine if we come out and execute."
Admission is free to Hoff Courts for all fans who want to attend. Hoff Courts is located behind the Cougar Baseball Field next to the Athletics/Alumni Center.
