HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior transfer Sophia Mundy (Katy, Texas/St. Pius X HS/Portland State) tallied the lone score for the University of Houston women's soccer team in a 1-1 double overtime tie against Southern Miss in a Conference USA road matchup Friday.
Freshman Kristin Carlyle (Sugar Land, Texas/Dulles HS) played a Southern Miss clearance ball back into the box to Mundy, who one-timed it to the left side of the net at the 42:29 mark, knotting up the game at one apiece.
Mundy's goal, her 13th of the season, set the single-season scoring record for the Cougars. She eclipses the mark of 12 goals, set by Nicole Aubuchon in 2000. She set the single-season mark for points last weekend against Tulane.
"Sophia (Mundy) has been the best finisher on the team this season," head coach Bill Solberg said. "The team works hard to put her into situations where she can be successful and she puts the ball in the back of the net when she has the chance."
Southern Miss opened up the scoring, forcing the Cougars to play down for the first time in four matches. Megan Kolts knocked home a service from Micah Stephens in the 29th minute putting the Golden Eagles up 1-0.
The tie moves the Cougars (8-5-3, 3-3-2 C-USA) one step closer to their first C-USA tournament slot since 2002. A win against the Golden Eagles (4-8-2, 1-6-1 C-USA) would have guaranteed a spot in the league's final eight.
UH had several opportunities to earn the go-ahead score as the Cougars had six corner kicks in the second half, but could muster only one shot.
"We didn't play well enough to win today," Solberg said. "I think a tie was a fair result. We have our work cut out for us Sunday, against UCF, because we did not take care of our business."
The Cougars were outshot by a 19-12 margin. Just three of UH's 12 shots were on goal with Southern Miss goalkeeper Holly Cox making two saves. Senior Stephanie Pucek (Alvin, Texas/Alvin HS) was tested often, making eight saves on the day.
Freshman Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) had four shots in the game, one of which was on goal.
The Cougars close out the regular season Sunday at UCF, their first-ever meeting with the Golden Knights. The Cougars need a win or tie to make the conference tournament outright. UH will also advance via a East Carolina or Tulsa loss. ECU plays at Marshall Saturday, while Tulsa plays host to Memphis later tonight and UAB on Sunday.
Action is scheduled to get underway at noon CDT in Orlando, Fla., at the UCF Soccer Complex.
