COLLEGE STATION - Brianna Bateup charged into the quarterfinal round of the main singles consolation draw with a pair of victories on Sunday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M campus.
Bateup cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Anete Rozkaine of Texas-Arlington and moved into the quarterfinals after Daysi Espinal of LSU withdrew due to an injury. She will now face Diana Espinal of Louisana-Monroe Monday morning.
Loli Gomez notched a gritty three-set victory in the consolation draw against Tiffany Lee of Rice, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5). In her second match of the day, Gomez fought back winning the second set, 6-3, against Tara Browining of Texas Tech after losing the opening set, 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Gomez dropped a 10-5 decision.
In consolation doubles action, Bateup and Lopez are still alive and will face No. 14 Cigdem Duru and Samantha Van der Drfit of Texas Tech Monday afternoon.
Tiffany McLaughlin and Yolandi Terblanche advanced into the semifinals before falling to Medeja Egic and Kimberly Patenaude of Rice, 8-5.
Kami Miller and Vicky Simpson edged out an 8-6 win over Carina Bjornstrom and Hedvig Lofdahl of Tulane, but withdrew in their second match of the day.
Houston will open the home slate of the fall season next weekend hosting the Cougar Fall Classic at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
