Houston Cougars (4-3, 2-2 C-USA) at Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-5, 0-4 SEC)
Saturday, October 22, 2005 * Davis Wade Stadium * Starkville, Miss.
** With Saturday's win, the Cougars pushed their lead to 8-6 (.571) in the all-time series against Mississippi State... The Cougars also won for the second straight time and the sixth time in the last seven games against the Bulldogs... It was the Cougars' first win in Starkville since taking a 31-14 win on Oct. 10, 1970.
** Cougars improved to 113-118-6 (.489) all-time in the month of October.
** With his catch around the 3:45 mark of the first quarter, junior wide receiver Vincent Marshall caught a reception in his 31st consecutive game dating back to the season opener on Aug. 30, 2003, against Rice at Robertson Stadium.
** With 242 yards of total offense, junior quarterback Kevin Kolb moved past Andre Ware (8,058 yards; 8,202 passing, -144 rushing, 1987-89) and into a tie with Jason McKinley (8,277 yards; 8,694 passing, -417 rushing) for second place in UH career history with 8,277 (7,817 passing, 460 rushing) yards of total offense... Up next in the UH records book is school record holder David Klinger who posted 9,327 yards of total offense (9,430 passing, -103 rushing) from 1988-91.
** Junior Vincent Marshall's 56-yard punt return for a touchdown was the first of his career... It was the first punt return by the Cougars since Charles West returned a punt 87 yards against Southern Miss on Nov. 9, 1996, a span of 97 games.
** With four receptions, junior wide receiver Vincent Marshall moved past Freddie Gilbert (158 receptions, 1991-92) and James Dixon (161 receptions, 1987-88) for fourth place in UH career history with 162 career catches... Up next in the UH records book is current secondary coach Jason Phillips who recorded 207 catches from 1987-88.
** With 49 receiving yards, junior wide receiver Vincent Marshall moved past former wide receiver and current secondary coach Jason Phillips into fifth place in UH career history with 2,363 receiving yards... Up next in the UH records book is Manny Hazard, who recorded 2,635 receiving yards from 1989-90.
** With two rushing touchdowns, junior running back Jackie Battle recorded his first multi-touchdown game of the 2005 season and the third of his career... He also rushed for a touchdown in his fourth consecutive game, becoming the first player since current teammate Anthony Evans on Nov. 15-Dec. 25, 2003, to accomplish that feat.
** Tight end Blade Bassler's 39-yard reception around the 11:45 mark of the second quarter was a career long... It topped his previous long of 37 yards set at Tulsa on Oct. 1, 2005.
** Senior wide receiver Kendal Briles' 7-yard touchdown reception at the 10:13 mark of the third quarter was the first receiving touchdown of his career.
** Consecutive Starts Streaks: Senior defensive end Kade Lane made his 43rd consecutive start, dating back to Aug. 31, 2002, against Rice at Rice Stadium... Quarterback Kevin Kolb made his 31st consecutive start dating back to season opener on Aug. 30, 2003, against Rice at Robertson Stadium.
** First Starts: Junior linebacker Scott Lee and sophomore wide receiver Jeron Harvey made their first career starts.
