First Day Recap - Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship

COLLEGE STATION - Kami Miller picked up two straight set wins to lead the University of Houston tennis team in qualifying at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championship on Friday.
Miller, seeded 13th in the draw, opened her day dismissing Marissa Brown of Texas-Arlington, 6-4; 6-4 before rolling past Raquel Wagner of host Texas A&M, 6-3; 6-3. Her next opponent is Karen Scida of Texas-San Antonio, who upended 5th seed Janet Durham of Texas Tech in three sets. If Miller gets past Scida on Saturday morning, she will gain one of eight qualifying spots in the main draw that gets underway Saturday afternoon.
Loli Gomez and Brianna Bateup have already qualified for the main draw. Gomez, the national Junior College champion from a year ago, faces off against Anna Sydorska of TCU on Saturday at 1pm, while Bateup squars off with Svetlana Kouzmenko of SMU at noon. Both Cougars have a potential match-up with seeded players in the second round that begins Sunday morning.
Yolandi Terblance, Vicky Simpson, Sonja Nikolic and Tiffany McLaughlin all garnered first round wins in qualifying before falling to seeded players in the next round.
In doubles, the Cougars went 2-2 on the day. Miller and Simpson edged out an 8-6 victory over Halle and Brooke Rambally of SMU. The duo of Miller and Simpson have a date with 8th seeded Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova of Baylor. Bateup and Gomez took to the court with an 8-2 win against Kiki Burns and Raquel Wagner of Texas A&M. Next up for that pair is Gloriann Lopez and Andrea Morgado of TCU. Both doubles matches are slated for 3:30pm.
Next weekend, Houston continues the fall season hosting the Cougar Fall Classic at Hoff Courts on the UH campus.
