HOUSTON - As the 2005 season approaches, the University of Houston Baseball team continues its preseason preparations with the annual Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series Luncheon.
The Luncheon will begin at noon, Monday, Feb. 7 in the Great Hall of the Athletics/Alumni Center on the UH campus.
UH head coach Rayner Noble, who begins his 11th season at the helm of the Cougar program in 2005, and Rice head coach Wayne Graham will discuss the 2005 season. Players from both baseball programs also will be on hand at the Luncheon.
Cost for the Luncheon is $10, and only cash or checks will be accepted. For more information or to buy tickets, fans should call UH director of baseball operations Traci Cauley at 713-743-9396.
This marks the eighth consecutive season that the Sterling Bank Silver Glove Series will be played between Houston and crosstown rival Rice. The Silver Glove Series is awarded to the team that wins the best-of-5 series.
In 2005, UH plays host to the Owls three times at the friendly confines of Cougar Field. The Series begins at 4 p.m., Feb. 15 at Cougar Field and continues at the Cougars' home facility with Game Three at 7 p.m., March 29 and the Series finale at 7 p.m. (May 17).
Houston will visit Rice's Reckling Park for Game Two at 4 p.m., Feb. 22 and for Game Four at 7 p.m., April 26.
Rice has won the Silver Glove trophy each of the last four years and six of the seven years in the Silver Glove Series. Only a Cougar series win in the 2000 season prevents a lengthy Owl streak.
A year ago, the Series was shortened to only four games due to rain. However, Rice captured the trophy after winning the final two games following a split between the two teams in the first two games.
