The University of Houston women's basketball team capitalized off their strength inside to cruise to a 65-45 win over South Florida Sunday at Hofheinz Pavilion to remain undefeated at home on the year and improve to 4-0 in Conference USA play.
Senior forward Sancho Lyttle keyed the attack scored 33 points and pulled down a career-high and school record tying 20 rebounds. She was 15 of 25 from the field. This marks Sancho Lyttle's 13th double-double on the season and eigth in a row.
The Lady Cougars opened up a 17-7 lead with 10:49 left in the first half after a Kiki Harris free throw and saw the lead grow to as many as 18 with a Lyttle lay-up with 1:56 left in the first half. Houston led 33-17 at the half.
The second half saw much of the same from the Lady Cougars, who never relinquished their double-digit lead. Houston would reach their biggest lead of 22 after a Daphne Andre 3-pointer, but USF went on an 11-2 run over a 2-minute span late in game to close within 12, 57-45, on two free throws by Anedra Gilmore with 2:37 left in the ballgame.
Houston closed the game on an 8-0 run, which included Lyttle recording her 20 rebound off a block of a Alana Tanksley jumper. After the block and rebound, Lyttle swished in the final jumper to give Houston the 65-45 victory.
Not all was good for the Lady Cougars as they won despite committing 24 turnovers.
Crystal Simpson added 10 points for Houston, and Harris just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. The Lady Coogs held a 54-28 advantage over the Bulls on the boards and a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass, which turned into 18 points for Houston in second chance points.
With the win, Houston goes to 13-3 on the year, and will see their next action Friday at Cincinnati and Louisville on Sunday, Jan. 23 before coming home to play TCU on Jan. 30.
