HOUSTON - After facing two Top Five opponents in the season's first four weeks, the University of Houston football team began preparations for another grueling portion of their schedule with a solid workout Tuesday at the UH Athletics Complex.
UH (1-3, 1-0 C-USA) plays three consecutive Conference USA games on the road, starting this weekend at Memphis. The Cougars will square off against the Tigers at 1 p.m., Saturday, at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn.
The game can be heard live on Star 790 KBME-AM, beginning with the pregame show 45 minutes prior to kickoff. Tom Franklin handles play-by-play duties, while Tony Fitzpatrick will provide color analysis. Chuck Brown will serve as the roving sideline reporter.
In addition, all Cougar football games can be heard live on the Internet by logging onto the UH Athletics web site at www.UHCougars.com.
Once the Memphis game is finished, the Cougars will face Southern Miss at 6 p.m., Oct. 7 in a nationally-televised game on ESPN2. After enjoying their lone bye week, the Cougars wrap up their stay on the road against state rival TCU on Oct. 23.
Despite such a difficult stretch against Conference USA opponents, second-year head coach Art Briles believes that the Cougars' early schedule will pay off.
"We've got a good, tough group of guys," Briles said. "If we didn't, then someone could have got us down and slapped us on the right cheek, then turned us over and slapped us on the left. We've proven that we can fight, that we're tough. Now, we have to win."
Running back Anthony Evans remains questionable after injuring a calf muscle in pregame warmups against No. 4 Miami on Sept. 23 at Reliant Stadium. If Evans is unable to go for the second straight weekend, Briles will turn to Jackie Battle and Ryan Gilbert, who provided solid effort on short notice against the Hurricanes.
"I was really proud of what Ryan and Jackie did during the game," Briles said. "They will be suited up and ready to go this week."
