HOUSTON - This weekend, Sept. 3-5, marks the beginning of the 2004 volleyball season for the Houston Cougars as they host the Park Plaza Kick-Off Tournament at the Athletics/Alumni Center at the University of Houston.
Attending the tournament will be some of the elite teams in the NCAA as preseason powers No. 10 Cal and No. 14 Kansas State, along with last season's No. 25 team Maryland, are making the trip to Houston.
Last season, the Terrapins and Wildcats each won their respective conferences, and both Cal and Kansas State advanced to the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament.
The Park Plaza Kick-Off is the first tournament hosted by the Cougars since the Conference USA Tournament was held at Hofheinz Pavilion in 2001.
Houston returns a team with all six starters from a year ago including all-conference performers sophomore outside hitter Kelly McAnelly and junior Libero Jaci Gonzalez.
The Park Plaza Kick-Off is free to the public and gets underway Friday at noon when Kansas State and Maryland hit the floor. Houston's first game is Friday night at 8:00 p.m. against Maryland following the Cal, Kansas State game at 6:00 p.m.
Houston plays again on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. when they take on No. 14 Kansas State and closes out the tournament on Sunday against No. 10 Cal at 1:00 p.m.
