FLOWER MOUND, Texas - The University of Houston golf team opens its 2003-04 season Monday when it competes at the Ferrell/Cobb Mean Green Classic at Lantana Golf Club.
The event is free and open to the public and begins at 8:30 a.m. each day.
A year ago, the Cougar finished in second place out of 16 teams at the Mean Green Classic on the 7,135-yard, par-72 course. UH remained consistent throughout the 2003 event and fired a season-best team score of 288 in the second round.
Four returning Cougars and a newcomer comprise head coach Vince Jarrett's lineup at the season-opening tournament. Jarrett begins his second season at the helm of the Cougar program after an award-winning career at Abilene Christian.
Junior Zach Mowbray returns after competing at the NCAA Central Regional at year ago. The Mesa, Ariz., native was the only Cougar linkster to play in the NCAA postseason during the 2003-04 season.
Mowbray was the only Cougar to compete in all 11 tournaments last season and topped all players with a 73.5 scoring average.
Sophomore Ricky Romano, who was named to the 2004 Conference USA All-Freshmen Team, finished second on the team with a 74.2 average and was the only Cougar golfer whose individual score counted toward the team total during every tournament in which he played.
Senior Jordan Hasbrouck brings pleasant memories of this tournament into Monday's opening rounds. Last season, he tied for second after shooting a season-best 68 in the second round.
Sophomore Pablo Acuna appeared in only one tournament a year ago, but his collegiate debut came at the Mean Green Classic.
Freshman Jordan Irwin broke into the Cougar lineup in his first season after a stellar prep career at The Master's Academy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
