Just over five minutes into the second half, Caitlin Robbins went on a breakaway and broke the scoreless tie with a shot past a diving Houston goalkeeper Katie Cook, and Rice went on to shut down the Cougar offense en route to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Cougars on Friday (Aug. 27) night at Robertson Stadium on the UH campus.
With the win, Rice now evens the lifetime series between the two cross-town rivals at 2-2. This marks the two schools' final match-up before becoming conference opponents as Rice is set to join Conference USA next season.
Despite the hard-fought battle on the field, which saw 12 fouls by each team, the Cougar offense could not get the ball in the net. Rice out-shot Houston, 24-8, on the night, including 10 shots on goal.
Cook notched eight saves, and senior midfielder Nikki Hawkins, a First Team All-Conference USA selection each of the past two seasons, led the Cougars with two shots on the night, with on on-goal.
With the loss, Houston falls to 0-1-0 on the year. They next travel to Denton, Texas, to take on the UNT Mean Green on Sunday, Aug. 29, with kick-off at 1:00pm, before heading out east to play South Carolina (Sept. 3) and Wofford (Sept. 5). The Cougars return home Sept. 10 and host UNLV at 7:00pm.
