The University of Houston women's soccer team saw a revitalized offense and scored its first goal of the season, but North Texas wore down the Cougar defense in taking a commanding lead and held on for a 5-1 victory over the Cougars on Sunday (Aug. 29) afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex in Denton, Texas.
Houston notched its only goal of the game off a penalty kick from Nikki Hawkins at 63:50.
North Texas struck early as senior defender Caree Ridenour scored only the second goal of her career at the 2:41 mark of the first half. Ridenour's goal came off a free kick that was taken behind the midfield line and sailed just in front of Houston goalkeeper Katie Cook before bouncing over her head and into the net.
The Mean Green extended their lead to 2-0 when freshman Heather Hutyra scored on a breakaway in the 34th minute of the first half. North Texas scored its third goal in the 41st minute off a mistake by Houston in their own end resulting in an own goal.
North Texas senior Alyssa Carrier made it 4-0 North Texas five minutes into the second half with a goal off a feed from defender Misty Cordon. In the 58th minute Cordon collected the Mean Green's fifth and final tally of the game with a goal from the left side of the box off a pass from sophomore Jamie Yates.
North Texas out shot the Cougars 13-10 and junior goalkeeper Briana Buchanan made four saves to pick up the win.
Hawkins and freshman Chelsea Davis led the Cougars with three shots a piece, including Davis with all three on goal, while fellow freshman Brooke Simon followed with two.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 0-2-0 on the year. Next up, they travel to face South Carolina on Friday, Sept. 3 at 6:00pm, and then play at Wofford on Sunday, Sept. 5 at noon.
