HOUSTON, Texas - On a hot, and extremely humid afternoon the University of Houston football team continued its pursuit of a Conference USA title with a physical workout on the UH practice fields. The Cougars are 10 days away from opening their 2004 season with the annual Administaff Bayou Bucket game with Rice on September 5, at Reliant Stadium. With sweat bristling on his brow, UH head coach Art Briles knows his Cougars must fight through the stifling heat if they want to achieve their goals this season. "It was pretty warm," said Briles. "I'm not a meteorologist, but I feel like there are other warm spots in the state and the nation today. We fought through it and did some good things. "We have to grind through this week, then pick up spirits next week and get ready for the Rice Owls." After two-plus weeks of practice, Briles and his staff have begun to fine-tune the workouts, especially with the fall semester of classes underway. Condensing and consolidating some of the practices will be a major goal of the UH coaching staff over the next few days. "(We're going to) call off a little bit of practice time," said Briles when asked about the next few days. "At the same time, we're going to increase the intensity while we're out here (and) increase the emotional aspect and increase the mental awareness." Houston will return to practice with scheduled workouts on Thursday and Friday, with an off day slated for Saturday. The Cougars will then settle in to their weekly routine with a light workout on Sunday, a scheduled off day on Monday and then back to game week practice on Tuesday. --- www.UHcougars.com ---
