HOUSTON, Texas - Strapping on full pads for the first time since fall camp started, the University of Houston football team saw its plan for a two-hour afternoon practice scuttled when the skies opened up and let loose with torrential rains. The Cougars will return to two-a-days tomorrow morning. Even with the inclement weather shortening his critical workout, UH head coach Art Briles feels his team is still on track as the season opener with Rice looms in the distance. "We were able to accomplish a lot (before the rains came)," said Briles. "To us, full pads is not that much different than shoulder pads and helmets. So, we just try to get out there and get used to the pants a little bit, stay healthy and fresh. That is the main thing. "We got some work done, then the clouds opened up. We needed the rain, so there is no complaints." Like the two previous ones, the Cougars began their day with a light workout indoors, running through some plays, schemes and drills before breaking for lunch. The two-a-days will continue tomorrow with the same pattern of a light morning workout followed by a lengthy outdoor practice in the afternoon. The Cougars kick off the 2004 season on Sunday, September 5, when they take on archrival Rice at 4 pm at Reliant Stadium. --- www.UHcougars.com ---
