HOUSTON - Despite out hitting Charlotte 8-3 in game two of a Sunday double header, the University of Houston softball team was not able pick up a win in their final home game of the season, as the 49ers edged the Cougars 4-3 with the help of the home runs.
With the Cougars holding a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Charlotte parlayed a walk and a single into their only major offense output of the day as Jessica Moore hot a three run home run to right center field off of Houston pitcher Jenny Johnson. The three-run home run was almost robbed by a highlight catch by Brooke Johnson, but the Cougar left fielder could not hold onto the ball while jumping and reaching over the fence on the run.
Kristen Glowacz answered the Moore home run with a line drive home run to start the bottom of the fifth inning. The home run cut the 49er lead to one at 4-3, but that was as close as the Cougars would get.
Houston (32-22, 9-11 C-USA) had jumped out to an early lead when Jamie Adams scored on a Jenilee Skender single to right center field. They added another run in the bottom of the third inning to break a 1-1 tie when Kristen Glowacz scored on a Skender double to left field.
Jenny Johnson took the loss for the Cougars, pitching a complete game, giving up four runs on three hits while striking out six.
Houston will close out the regular season on the road next weekend with a three game series against the Saint Louis Billikens. The two teams will play a double header on Saturday starting a 1 p.m. and will finish with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
