HOUSTON, Texas - For the second consecutive year junior third baseman Kristen Glowacz (Katy, Texas) was named First Team, All-Conference USA, as it was announced today by the league office.
Record-breaking senior pitcher Jenny Johnson (Huntsville, Ala.) and junior utility player Jenilee Skender (Hallsville, Texas) picked up second team honors, while infielder Jenny Adams (Houston, Texas) was selected to the C-USA All-Freshman Team.
Glowacz led the Cougars in all major hitting categories, leading the squad in batting average (.341), doubles (13), home runs (9), RBI (42) and slugging percentage (.598). In starting all 57 games for the Cougars, Glowacz helped lead UH to a 35-22 overall record and into the Conference USA Tournament for the second consecutive year.
The 2002 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, Glowacz also stole 13-of-15 bases and fielded .960 from the hot corner.
Johnson was the Cougars' ace on the mound this season, pacing the UH pitching staff with an 11-7 record and a school- and Conference USA-record eight saves. Opponents hit just .179 against Johnson, while the senior right-hander posted a 1.21 earned run average in a team-best 144.1 innings of work.
As for Skender, she earned the right to be the second-best utility player in the league by starting at three different positions this past season (catcher, first base and designated player.) Skender was second to Glowacz in home runs (8) and RBI (39), while hitting .281 and slugging .477.
Adams began the year as a Cougar reserve before working her way into the starting lineup a month into the season. As the Cougars' regular second baseman, Adams hit .237 with a team-leading 17 sacrifice hits. She also swiped six of seven bases in her first collegiate season.
Southern Miss' Auriel Jenkins was named the C-USA Most Valuable Player, while her head coach, Gay McNutt, was selected as the league's Coach of the Year. Leigh Ann Ellis of USF was named the Pitcher of the Year, and Louisville's Audrey Rendon was picked the league's top freshman.
The Cougars continue their season as the fifth seed in the Conference USA Tournament. UH faces #4 DePaul tomorrow morning at 10 am at the tournament hosted by the University of Louisville.
