HOUSTON, Texas - Former University of Houston offensive lineman Rex Hadnot today was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. Hadnot was the 174th selection overall, a pick used by the Dolphins that the franchise had acquired earlier from the Atlanta Falcons.
A First Team, All-Conference performer for the Cougars last season, Hadnot played both guard and center in his four-year Houston career, including the last 36 straight as a starter. Hadnot was instrumental in helping the Cougars return to the postseason in 2003, the first bowl game for Houston since 1996. The Cougar offense was one of the most potent offenses in the nation, scoring over 40 points on seven different occasions. Only Texas and Texas Tech achieved that landmark.
The Cougar rushing offense (215.54 yards per game) and total offense (458.31 ypg.) ranked 12th nationally among Division I school, while the scoring offense (34.46 ppg.) was 16th. The Cougars were one of only six teams in the nation to have a 1,000-yard rusher (Anthony Evans), 1,000-yard receiver (Brandon Middleton) and 3,000-yard passer (Kevin Kolb).
Hadnot becomes the sixth former Cougar to be drafted by the Dolphins and the first since Miami selected another offensive lineman, Billy Milner, in the first round (25th pick overall) in the 1994 NFL Draft. Last season, former safety Hanik Milligan was picked by the San Diego Chargers in the sixth round, so the back-to-back yearly selections of Cougars is the first since at least one former UH standout was taken in each year from 1989-1997.
Recruited by former UH head coach Kim Helton in 1999, Hadnot played for three head coaches in his UH career, as well as four offensive coordinators. After redshirting in 1999, Hadnot was a backup for one season (2000) before earning a starting nod prior to the 2001 campaign.
