HOUSTON - After winning their third consecutive Conference USA series last weekend at Saint Louis, the University of Houston baseball team looks to continue its good feelings when it plans Texas-San Antonio at 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas.
Despite dropping a 4-3 decision to the Billikens in the series opener Friday - which snapped an 18-game winning streak against SLU - the Cougars rebounded to take convincing wins in the final two games of the series. In both wins, UH pounded out a season bests 16 hits to win the series.
All three games can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHCougars.com with Chris Burkhalter and Pat Cauley calling the action. Fans can follow live stats of all three games at www.UHCougars.com by clicking on the Gametracker link on the bottom of the main page.
Sophomore southpaw Matt Farrington makes his second start of the season Tuesday afternoon. This season, Farrington has compiled an 0-1 record with a 5.06 ERA and 26 strikeouts in only 21.1 innings of work.
The Sugar Land, Texas native is the only Cougar southpaw to start a game for UH in 2004.
This will be the first time that Farrington has faced Texas-San Antonio from the mound. However, he has recorded a .333 career batting average with three putouts in the outfield against the Roadrunners.
After recording three consecutive multi-hit games at Saint Louis last weekend, senior infielder Cole Bruce jumped into the team lead with a .345 batting average. Senior DH Brett Cooley, slowed by a hamstring injury all season, blasted a monster solo homer run in the middle game of the SLU series and continues to lead the Cougars with six home runs and 26 RBIs.
Junior infielder Stuart Musslewhite has emerged as one of the team's hottest hitters, batting safely in each of his last 11 games, both a career and UH season best.
The Cougars will meet Texas-San Antonio for the third consecutive year on the baseball diamond. However, this will be the first time since 1995 that the two teams have squared off in San Antonio, Texas.
The Cougars own an 8-4 (.667) all-time record in the series, which began in 1992 and continued at least once every year until 1995.
UH brings a five-game winning streak against the Roadrunners into Tuesday afternoon's game. UTSA's last win in the series was a 10-2 decision on March 2, 1994 in the nightcap of a doubleheader. The Cougars are 1-2 all-time against the Roadrunners in San Antonio, Texas.
The Roadrunners (20-18) come into the game after losing two of three to Southland Conference rival Texas State in San Antonio last weekend. Sophomore infielder Ryan Crew is the team's Triple Crown leader with a .343 batting average, six home runs and 30 RBIs.
