HOUSTON - Despite taking an early lead against the Louisville Cardinals Sunday afternoon, the University of Houston softball team could not muster enough offense to come away with a series finale win, falling 2-1 at the Cougar Softball Complex.
Houston (28-19, 7-8 C-USA) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Arelis Ferreris and Jaci Gonzalez completed a double steal with Ferreris stealing home. That would be the extent of the Cougar scoring, as Louisville Aja Sherman did not allow Houston base runner to get past second base.
The Cardinals answered Houston's run, with two of their own in the top pf the fourth inning. Lisa Estes and Sherman advanced to third base and second base respectively on a wild pitch by Cougar pitcher Carla Kennimer and Estes tied the game at 1-1 on a passed ball, which got past Ferreris. Louisville took the lead on the next pitch when Audrey Rendon singled in Sherman, which capped the scoring for both teams.
Kennimer took the loss for the Cougars, giving up four hits and one earned run in three and two thirds innings while striking out three Cardinals. Jenny Johnson pitched in relief for Houston for the third consecutive game, giving up just one hit and no runs in three and one third innings.
Houston will be in action again Saturday April 24 when they take on USF in Tampa Fla. In a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
