Houston softball falls victim to Louisville long balls

HOUSTON - After jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead in game two of a double header, the University of Houston fell victim to two, two-run home runs by Louisville, en route to a 4-3 loss at the Cougar Softball Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars (28-18, 7-7 C-USA) grabbed the early lead in game two taking advantage of a Louisville error to get on the board. Kim Nesloney singled and stole second base to leadoff the first inning and got to third on a single by Kristen Glowacz. Nesloney scored on a sacrifice fly by Jenilee Skender to give Houston a 1-0 advantage.

Louisville (34-10, 15-2 C-USA) answered back in the second inning with a two-run home run off the bat of Aja Sherman to take a 2-1 lead.

Houston quickly grabbed the lead back from the Cardinals in the third inning, picking up two runs on one hit while taking advantage of an error by Louisville pitcher Catherine Bishop who overthrew the ball to first base on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Adams. Nesloney advanced to third on the error and Adams reached second. Houston tied the game on a bunt single by Glowacz and took the lead on a double steal with Adams scoring and Glowacz reaching second.

The Cardinals however, had one more long ball in them, a two-run shot by Lacy Wood, which knocked in Sara Bausher who had been hit by a pitch to start the inning.

Crystal Briscoe took the loss for Houston, pitching five and one thirds innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits while striking out seven. Johnson pitched in relief of Briscoe, giving up just one hit.

Kady Garrick picked up the win for Louisville, improving to 16-4 on the season.

The Cougars and the Cardinals will wrap up the regular season series Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Cougar Softball Complex.
