Brian Latham Signs With Houston

Houston, Texas- - University of Houston head basketball coach Tom Penders announced that Brian Latham of Midland College has signed a letter of intent to play for the Cougars in 2004-05.
"Brian is a leader who can play the point or two-guard position," Penders said. "He is extremely athletic and loves to play defense. He will fit right into our system and be very productive from the get go."
A native of Memphis, Tenn., Latham is a 6-1 sophomore guard who averaged 8.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He also ranked fourth among Western Junior College Athletic Conference leaders in assists with a 4.4 average and steals with 2.3 per game. He also ranked 10th among league leaders second on Midland's team for the second straight year in blocked shots with 21 throughout the regular season.
As a freshman, Latham earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors after averaging 6.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.5 steals and ranked second on the team in blocked shots with 13.
He played at East High School in Memphis and once recorded a "triple double" with 44 points, 18 rebounds and 14 steals in a game.
Latham is the second player from Midland College to sign with Houston since Penders was named head coach on March 23, 2004. He re-joins his current teammate, Englebert Cherrington.
Latham and Cherrington come to Houston after helping lead Midland to a 30-7 overall record and a third place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament in 2003-04. The Chaparrals also won the Western Junior College Athletic Conference with a 13-1 mark and the NJCAA Region V Tournament Championship.
