Millford, Conn. - The Oklahoma Storm selected the University of Houston's Anwar Ferguson in the second round of the 2004 United States Basketball League Draft. The league held its 19th Annual Draft via a teleconference call from the USBL League Office and broadcast live via the internet.
Ferguson, who was the 18th player overall selected in the 12-team draft, finished his collegiate career leading the nation in blocked shots with an average of 4.1 per game.
Ferguson started all 27 of Houston's game during his senior year and averaged 7.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. His 4.1 blocked shots per game ranks as the fourth-highest single season average in school history.
The Oklahoma Storm are based in Enid, Okla., and partially owned by former NBA star Shawn Kemp. Kemp has agreed to play for the team in 2004 and former NBA player, Brent Price, serves as a player-coach for the team. Last season, Albert Mourning was named the USBL Player-of-the-Year while playing for the Storm. Mourning will rejoin the team in 2004 after averaging 28.4 points per game last season.
The Storm selected Jabahri Brown of Oklahoma with the eighth overall pick in the first round, before selecting Ferguson with the 18th pick in the second round, Janavor Weatherspoon of Oklahoma State in the third round and Darnell Hinson of Northeastern Oklahoma in the fourth round.
