HOUSTON, Texas - For the second time this season University of Houston senior pitcher Jenny Johnson (Huntsville, Ala.) has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, sharing the weekly honor this time with USF?s Leigh Ann Ellis.
Johnson pitched in five of Houston's six games last week, helping the Cougars to a 4-2 record. In the Conference USA series opener against East Carolina, Johnson pitched the final three innings of relief to save the Cougars' 2-1 win over the Pirates. It was Johnson's sixth save of the season, setting a new Conference USA record. The next day Johnson started against ECU and picked up the victory in the Cougars' 9-0 win, completing the sweep of the Pirates.
In the weekend series against #5 Oklahoma, Johnson pitched in all three games, allowing just one run in over 10 innings of work. In the finale against the Sooners Johnson relieved Carla Kennimer and held the potent OU lineup hitless for the final 4.1 innings, as Johnson picked up the win and Houston knocked off its highest ranked opponent in school history.
The Cougars and Johnson return to action on Tuesday, March 9, when they travel to San Marcos to face Texas State in a doubleheader beginning at 6 pm.
