HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team picked up its second consecutive win over a Top 75 opponent Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 win over No. 73 Central Florida at the John E Hoff Varsity courts. Houston also made its first appearance in the top 75 today coming in at No. 75.
The Cougars got the ball rolling early in the match taking all three doubles matches. Miranda Foley and Biljana Dimovska paired up to take out Julie Pecastaing and Ola Luczak 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles match, Karine Urbin and Diana Martin defeated Anna Westin and Kristina Lohmos 8-2 while the team of Yolandi Terblanche and Kami Miller beat Megan Hunter and Pamela Fernandez 8-3.
"This was the first doubles point we have gotten in over a month," Houston head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "It was nice to see the team step up. Getting the doubles point gives you an advantage going into singles play and today it definitely helped."
In singles play the Cougars took four of the six matches as Foley beat Pecastaing 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles spot and Terblanches knocked off Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 match. In the No. 5 match Miller downed Luczak 7-6, 6-1 while Urbin defeated Hunter 7-6, 7-5 in the six spot.
UCF picked up its two wins in the No.2 and No. 3 matches with Westin knocking off Dimovska 6-0, 6-4 and Lohmos beating Martin 7-6, 6-4 respectively.
Hyde said the win over UCF was important because it gives the Cougars momentum heading into an important Conference USA match up with Louisville on Thursday morning.
"I'm very pleased with the last two wins over Utah and UCF, but we still have a lot of work to do," Hyde said. "Our goal is to be 7-7 when we play Rice next week.
"We are continuing to improve and the girls are beginning to see it and believe it. Thursday will be a big match for us as far as seeding goes. Louisville beat us 4-3 last year so there is a lot of motivation for our girls to go out there and get some redemption."
The Cougars will be in action again Thursday morning when they take on Louisville at 10 a.m.
