HOUSTON - In front of a crowd of close to 500 people the University of Houston Lady Cougar basketball team watched as they were selected as a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament where they will take on 14 seed Wisconsin-Green Bay in Santa Barbara, CA on Saturday March 20.
This will be the first trip to the NCAA Tournament for Houston since 1992. The Lady Cougars last trip to the Big Dance took them to Santa Barbara where they were knocked out in the first round by UC-Santa Barbara 80-69.
Houston picked up a school record 27 wins, while also tying the league mark for the most victories. In addition, Houston had their best record ever in C-USA play with a 13-1 conference mark, while earning the highest ranking in conference history with a No. 10 showing in this week's ESPN/USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll. The Lady Cougars are currently on a school best 12-game win streak heading into the NCAA Tournament.
"We are going to go home tonight and start getting ready for Wisconsin-Green Bay," head coach Joe Curl said. "We will certainly look at what they do but we are going to get our team ready for what we need to do when we get there."
Three other Conference USA teams received invitations to the NCAA Tournament, with DePaul, Marquette and TCU joining Houston in the Big Dance.
"It's a testament to our conference that we got four teams in the tournament," Curl said. "I think Louisville should have been in also but we have been on that side of it before also, not having your name pop up. I think it is great the conference got four teams in though."
UW-Green Bay (23-7) won the Horizon League Tournament to gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The postseason berth marks the third straight NCAA tournament bid and sixth in the past seven seasons for UW-Green Bay.
