HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team wraps up its season-long homestand at 7 p.m., Tuesday, as it plays host to No. 25 Baylor at Cougar Field.
The game can be heard live over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with the pre-game show slated to begin about 15 minutes before first pitch. Fans also can view live stats at www.UHcougars.com by clicking on the "Gametracker" link on the Daily Calendar at the bottom of the main page.
Senior righthander Brett Cooley is expected to make his first career start against the Bears. In 2004, the Round Rock, Texas, native has thrown 3.2 innings out of the bullpen and recorded three strikeouts and a 4.91 ERA during that time.
Baylor southpaw Cory VanAllen should make the start for the Bears. This season, VanAllen has posted a 1-0 record with four strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in just 6.1 innings of work.
Senior infielder Cole Bruce leads the Cougars with a .355 batting average, while junior shortstop Stuart Musslewhite tops the team with nine RBIs.
The Cougars (3-7) come into the game on the heels of a 4-2 win over No. 8 Long Beach State on Sunday in the finale of a non-conference series at Cougar Field. That win snapped a season-long four-game losing streak.
In that game, freshman pitcher Brad Lincoln held the 49ers to only one hit through five innings. After walking the leadoff batter, the Clute, Texas, native retired the next 10 batters and did not allow any baserunners beyond second base on the way to his first collegiate win.
Catcher Rob Johnson batted 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and a stolen base, while Brett Logan went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Offensively, Mike Heldoorn tops the Bears with a .429 batting average, while Josh Ford leads with seven RBIs.
Tuesday's game marks the 41st consecutive season that the Cougars will meet Baylor on the baseball diamond. The Bears own an 82-56 lead in the series, which began in 1951 and has been played at least once every season since 1964.
The Bears, ranked No. 25 in the latest Baseball America poll, come into the game after losing two of three to No. 16 Arizona in Waco last weekend.
