HOUSTON, Texas - Shoddy defense in the second inning led to two unearned runs, as the University of Houston fell to BYU, 2-0, in the first game of the Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic played at the Cougar Softball Complex.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 11-6 on the year and will face Mississippi State and Pittsburgh tomorrow.
In the top of the second Ianeta Le'i drew a walk off of sophomore Crystal Briscoe (3-1), and Kim Dabo pinch ran for her. Ashlyn Russell attempted a sacrifice bunt, but UH's Kristen Glowacz threw it away for an error to advance both runners to second and third. Kate Walker singled to left to score Dabo, and when UH leftfielder Brandi Clark misplayed the hit, Russell scored the second BYU run.
Senior Jenny Johnson relieved Briscoe and escaped further damage by inducing a foul out to senior catcher Arelis Ferreris, a fly out to Clark and a strikeout swinging.
Houston?s only offensive threats came in the first and third innings, when junior Kim Nesloney led off the frame with a single to right field and then promptly stole second base. But, Clark, Glowacz and Ferreris were unable to bring Nesloney home.
In the third Nesloney coaxed a two-out walk and reached third on a single by Clark to right field. Both runners were stranded when Glowacz grounded out to third.
The only other hit for the Cougars was a one out single by junior Jeanie Davis in the third.
