HOUSTON, Texas - One day after looking for runs in a 2-0 shutout at the hands of BYU, the University of Houston Cougars jumped on Mississippi State pitcher Melissa Massey for three first inning runs, and the UH pitching tandem of Jamie Falco and Jenny Johnson allowed just one run, as the Cougars defeated the Bulldogs, 3-1, at the Hyatt Regency Cougar Classic.
The Cougars improved to 12-6 on the year, while MSU falls to 13-5.
Junior Kim Nesloney led off the bottom of the first with a single to second base. Senior Arelis Ferreris, batting in the two hole for the first time this season, sacrificed Nesloney to second, and she scored on a double down the right field line by junior Kristen Glowacz. Sophomore Brandi Clark capped the Cougar scoring by blasting a two-run home run over the left field fence. It was the second four-bagger on the year for Clark.
Falco improved to 3-0 on the year by going 5.2 innings and giving up just the one Bulldog run. In the top of the sixth MSU's Kate Jaspers led off the inning with a bunt single, and after one out Blaire Brown singled to put runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice Hayle Guess doubled to left field to score Jaspers, but the ball careened into the bullpen for a ground-rule double. With runners at second and third Johnson relieved Falco and coerced a foul pop to Glowacz to end the threat.
In the seventh Johnson retired the Bulldogs in order to register her fifth save of the season, which is a new school record.
