Cougar tennis drops heartbreaker to SMU

HOUSTON - The University of Houston tennis team dropped a close match to Southern Methodist University Sunday afternoon at the John E. Hoff Varsity Courts on the UH campus, falling to the Mustangs 4-3.
Houston head coach Jennifer Hyde said the match was a total heartbreaker for the Cougars, as it was decided by the SMU's win in the No. five singles match. The Mustangs Halley Rambally defeated Houston's Karine Urbin in three sets 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 to seal win.
Five of the six singles matches went three sets, the only match not to go three was between Houston's Diana Martin and SMU's Nadia Vaughan who had to retire in the middle of the second match. Martin won the match 7-6, 2-1.
Houston picked up their other points of the match in singles wins by Miranda Foley who knocked off Jenny Langer 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, and Kami Miller who beat Brooke Rambally 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.
In other singles action Svetlana Kouzmenko beat Biljana Dimovska 6-2, 7-6 in No.1 singles, Kit Carson beat Yoalndi Terblanche 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in the number two spot.
In doubles play the Mustangs took all three matches from the Cougars as Kit Carson and Svetlana Kouzmenko defeated Houston's Biljana Dimovska and Miranda Foley 8-1 in No. 1 singles; Jenny Langer and Jenny Langerr beat Karine Urbine and Diana Martin 8-6 while Nadia Vaughan and Lynsie Jones handed Yolandi Terblanche and Kami Miller an 8-6 loss.
