HOUSTON - Off for nearly two full weeks, the University of Houston tennis team returned to action Friday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to Alabama at the John E. Hoff Varsity Courts.
After winning its last match against Conference USA rival UAB on Feb. 8, UH was scheduled to meet LSU on Feb. 14. However, that match was rained out and rescheduled for Feb. 25, forcing a lengthy break for the Cougar netters.
The Cougars, who dropped to 4-2 overall this season, were swept in all three doubles matches by 8-6 scores before falling in six singles matches.
Sophomore Yolandi Terblanche provided the biggest highlights for the Cougars as she fell in three sets. After rallying to win the second set 6-3, Terblanche and Alabama's Nathalie Koppelle slugged it out before the Crimson Tide's No. 3 player prevailed 10-8 in the final frame.
Playing at No. 6 singles, Kami Miller pushed Mari Muller before falling in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
Other Cougars competing were Biljana Dimovska, Miranda Foley, Karine Urbin and Diana Martin.
UH returns to action at 11 a.m., Sunday, when it meets state rival SMU at the Hoff Varsity Courts. Admission is free to the matches, and the public is invited to attend.
