HOUSTON, Texas - DePaul's frontcourt played havoc on the Cougars all evening long, scoring at will and leading the Blue Demons to a 66-54 win over Houston in front of 2,194 at Hofheinz Pavilion. With the loss the Cougars fall to 8-14 on the year and 2-9 in Conference USA play, while the Blue Demons continued their impressive season and now stand at 15-7 overall, 8-3 in league action.
The trio of Delonte Holland, Quemont Greer and Andre Brown accounted for 51 points, with Holland leading all scorers with a game-high 19 points on eight-of-14 shooting. The Cougars were paced by the duo of Andre Owens and Lanny Smith, who each scored 11 points. Anwar Ferguson chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Trailing by three at the half, 32-29, the Cougars took their only second-half lead four minutes into the half on a layup by Aaron Anderson and a free throw by Owens. DePaul went on a 9-0 run to take command of the game. The Blue Demons pushed their lead to double-digits with 3:40 left in the game on a inside jumper by Greer, and the Cougars were left with trying to drain three-pointers to slice into the deficit.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with the lead changing hands 11 times. Houston had a lead as large as four, including a 21-17 advantage on a Ramon Dyer dunk with less eight minutes to play; however, DePaul set the tone for the evening by taking back the lead on five straight points, as the Blue Demon inside game began to wear on the thin Cougar frontline.
Overall, the Cougars shot 39.6 from the field while holding DePaul to 47.8. Houston committed just 12 turnovers, while forcing nine from the vistors.
Houston returns to the road on February 18, traveling to Southern Miss to take on the Golden Eagles. USM knocked off the Cougars, 75-72, in triple overtime earlier in the month at Hofheinz Pavlion.
