HOUSTON - Senior guard Andre Owens equaled his season high 26 points and Dwight Jones came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points and lead the University of Houston to a 95-52 victory over Grambling State Saturday night in Hofheinz Pavilion.
Playing just their second home game this season, Houston opened the game holding the Tigers scoreless in the first seven minutes of the game, and opened the second half with a 24-0 run in the first 5:17 to break open the game.
Playing its sixth game in 12 days and just second home game of the season, Houston opened each half with outstanding defensive efforts. The Cougars held the Tigers scoreless in the first seven minutes of the game and opened the second half with a 24-0 run in the first 5:17.
"Our kids are totally focused on defense and that is where I want them," Houston head coach Tom Penders said. "We came out in our 21 press. We had been switching and pressing, but tonight, we pressed and rotated and it worked really well."
The Cougars forced the Tigers into 27 turnovers and scored 38 points off of them.
"Having a 38-3 points off turnover advantage really impressed me," Penders said. "I was in a nasty mood all day because I didn't want us to come out satisfied with the win over Missouri and play selfishly tonight. But, we did a real good job of getting the ball to our shooters when they were hot. That is a sign of a mature team."
Sophomore point guard Lanny Smith and junior reserve Cedrick Hensley joined Owens and Jones, II in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The victory improves Houston's overall record to 4-2 and the Cougars play at crosstown rival Rice, on Tuesday, November 30.
