In the season finale and the final hoorah for four seniors, the University of Houston women's soccer team played stellar defense yet couldn't get the offense going as it fell to the visiting Charlotte 49ers, 2-0, in a Conference USA match-up on Friday (Oct. 29) night at Robertson Stadium on the UH campus.
After a scoreless half which saw the Cougars hold the 49ers to just five shots while making two saves, Charlotte's Lindsey Beam and Kim Miles combined on a pass to Brittany Dorsch, who turned to sail a shot over the head of Houston goalie Nicole Oliver in the 67th minute.
Charlotte notched its second goal just four minutes later I the 71st minute, when Lindsey Palmiero took a deflection off a Houston defender and placed it into the net.
The Cougars came close when All-Conference candidate and senior midfielder Nikki Hawkins had a free kick on the 20-yard line with a little over eight minutes to play, but her kick sailed too far to the right.
Prior to kick-off of the final games of their respective collegiate careers, Hawkins, Oliver and fellow seniors Sherika Hardaway and Anne Gasser were each honored for their careers at Houston.
In the game, Hawkins led Houston with three shots, including one on-goal. Oliver recorded six saves to bring her season total to 81 on the year, tying her for fourth-best in school history. Meanwhile, Hawkins closes out her four-year career as Houston's all-time leader in goals (27), points (63), game-winning goals (7) and tied for first in shots (153).
Houston's closes out its seventh season of competition with a 5-14-0 record, including 2-8-0 in C-USA action.
