CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A well spread offensive outing was just what the Cougars needed to pick up their third win in their last four outings as they dropped the Charlotte 49ers 3-2 in Charlotte on Saturday night.
With four Cougars reaching double digits in kills and five landing in double-digit digs, the Houston volleyball team now stands at 3-1 in Conference USA play while the 49ers drop to 1-3.
For the second straight match, junior Kariny Ritter was impressive for the Cougars, this time turning in her third double double of the year with a match high 21 kills and 15 digs. Teammate, sophomore Kelly McAnelly, was right behind Ritter with 19 kills and 13 digs to post her seventh double double of the year.
Junior setter Jennifer Hohl was responsible for spreading the ball around the Cougar team and did it by dishing out 60 of the team's 66 assists, on her way to setting a career high in the category on the night.
Other Cougars vital to the win included senior Loure Dews with 14 kills and four blocks, junior Jaci Gonzalez who had 21 digs, senior Mirela Vasconcellos with 12 digs, sophomore Becca Sartori, who had 15 kills and four blocks and seven digs on the evening.
Since starting the year at 1-11 before entering conference play, the Cougars have come together and have won three-of-four outings and are now 9-1 all-time against Charlotte.
The win marks the first time this season the Cougars have strung together back-to-back victories after defeating East Carolina University on Friday 3-0.
On the night, the Cougars (4-12, 3-1) found themselves with the early lead in Saturday's battle after a 30-26 win in Game 1. But the 49ers rebounded by taking wins by narrow margins in Games 2 and 3 by scores of 31-29 and 30-28, respectively, leaving Houston in a 2-1 deficit.
Facing defeat if they lost in Game 4, the Cougars rallied and won with the biggest margin of the night in a 30-25 win to force a decisive Game 5.
The Cougars did what was needed in the final game of the match as they took the game and the match in a 15-13 win to close out their North Carolina road trip with a second straight victory.
Next week, Houston is back in action at home for a two-match home stand against conference foes, Cincinnati and Louisville on Oct. 15 and 16, respectively.
