The University of Houston Track and Field team hosted its annual Leonard Hilton Memorial meet on Friday (Jan. 23) at the Yeoman Field House inside the Athletics/Alumni Center with the Cougar men taking first place and the women placing fourth as Houston captured five events.
Among the schools competing in the meet included Rice, Texas, Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M, UT-Arlington, TCU, Texas A&M, Miami, Army, Mississippi College and Stephen F. Austin.
Houston All-American Stanford Routt, running for the first time this indoor season, scored NCAA-provisional marks while capturing both the men's 60m and 200m races. In the prelims of the 60m, he notched an NCAA-provisional finish in 6.69 seconds, then set a new meet record in besting his prelims finish in 6.67 seconds. Freshman Carey LaCour, who won the men's 200m dash in last week's Indoor Opener, captured second place in the race with a 6.73-second finish.
In the men's 200m dash, Routt set his second NCAA-provisional mark of the day in crossing the finish line in 21.13 seconds.
Shayla Bowman captured the women's weight throw while setting a new Houston school record, besting her showing last weekend with a throw of 16.88 meters (55-04.75 ft.). The previous UH record was 16.69 meters (54-9.25 ft.) set by Katie Herndon in 1998.
The Houston men's 4x400 relay team of Nicholas Garza, Stanford Routt, Michael Francis and Carey LaCour shaved nearly two full seconds off their time in last week's Indoor Opener win and took first with a finishing time of 3:17.35.
Houston freshman Caresir Hamilton took the women's high jump, equaling her season high of 1.73 meters (5-08.00 ft.).
Other Cougars who recorded points in field events include Alex Cantu, who took second in the men's pole vault (4.90 meters) and Johnathan Reeves, who finished second in the men's shot put (17.06 meters (55-11.75 ft.).
Sophomore distance runner Sesa Figueroa raced to a second-place finish in the men's mile with a season-best 4:16.01.
Other highlights in the meet include the display of Texas freshman Michelle Carter, who set a new meet record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women's shot put with a throw of 17.05 meters (55-11.25 ft.). In addition, Texas sprinter Raasin McIntosh set a new Yeoman Field House record in the women's 200-meter dash with a 23.78-second finish.
The meet was the second of four indoor meets that Houston hosts this season. Following a bye weekend next weekend, the Cougars host the Houston Indoor Invitational at the Yeoman Field House on Feb. 7 with field events getting underway at 9:00am.
