HOUSTON - After leading the University of Houston women's basketball team to victories over Wichita State and nationally ranked TCU, Chandi Jones earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors for the period ending Jan. 18.
Jones led the No. 25 Cougars to a 61-59 victory over No. 17 TCU on Sunday Jan. 18. Her biggest basket of the day came with 28.9 seconds left to play when she banked in a jumper to give Houston a 60-59 lead. Jones then tallied her eighth rebound and was fouled with two seconds to play in the game and went on to sink the first two free throws to seal the 61-59 victory for the Lady Cougars. Jones finished the day with 32 points, her second 30-plus point game of the season. For the week, she averaged 26.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. The Cougars are on a nine-game winning streak and 3-0 in C-USA play for the first time in school history.
Jones is averaging 21 points per game through Houston's first 16 games this season. Last season she led the NCAA in scoring with 27.5 points per game.
With Jones being named the women's basketball Player of the Week, she joins fellow Cougars Alicia Cave (track and field) and Azul Almazan (diving) who were honored in their respective sports.
