Cougar volleyball breaks seven game skid

HOUSTON, Texas - Double-double performances by freshman Lauren Rhodes and junior Cinthia Piva helped the University of Houston volleyball team break a seven game losing streak in a four game (30-27, 21-30, 30-20, 30-15) win over the Ole Miss Lady Rebels at Hofheinz Pavilion Friday night.
Piva led all players in the match with 15 kills and 10 block assists while Rhodes had 14 kills and 24 digs. Piva was one dig away from a triple double performance with nine while Loure Dews and Kelly McAnelly added 10 kills each. Jaci Gonzalez added 16 digs for the Cougars and setters Mirela Vascocellos and Lauren Grover had 30 and 18 assists respectively.
After entering the break tied at one game apiece, the Cougars (3-8) came out with intensity for games three and four. Houston hit .333 in game three with 8 block assists and a solo block from Dews who also had four kills in the game. Piva led the Cougars with five kills while McAnnely picked up three.
In game four McAnelly put down five kills with Rhodes and Piva adding three apiece to lead the Cougars to a 30-15 win.
Ole Miss was led by Rachel Refenes and Elena Garcia who had 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Houston will be in action again Sunday when they take on Texas A&M at 2 p.m. at Hofheinz Pavilion.
