2003 Cougar Softball Season Highlights

In only its third year of existence, the Cougar softball program made history once again during the 2003 campaign. Here's a look at what 19 talented student athletes and a dedicated coaching staff accomplished this season:
* The Cougars finish the 2003 campaign with a 36-24 overall and 15-9 league record, the best in school history.
* Houston posted two wins over ranked opponents in 2003 -- No. 8 LSU (March 1) and No. 19 South Florida (May 3).
* As a team, Houston led C-USA in homeruns (59) and doubles (79) and was second in total bases (691), walks (176), slugging percentage (.450) and triples (11).
* Houston hosted the 2003 Conference USA Softball Tournament at the Cougar Softball Stadium May 8-10 and entered the six-team double-elimination tournament as a No. 3 seed.
* The Cougars went 1-2 at the C-USA Tournament, defeating UAB, but falling to South Florida and Southern Miss.
* Houston set the single-season league record for home runs in 2003, hitting 59 in 60 games this season. Southern Miss set the former record of 49 in 2000.
* A handful of those dingers were hit by sophomore Kristen Glowacz, who finished the season with a conference-record tying mark of 14 home runs and a .699 slugging percentage. Former Golden Eagle Amy Berman posted 14 dingers in 2000.
* In addition to posting a program-best win mark, the five Cougars earned All-C-USA honors in 2003. The Cougars were led by 2003 First Team All-C-USA selections Kristen Glowacz and Arelis Ferreris while hurler Jamie Falco was named to the All-CUSA Second Team and freshmen Jaci Gonzalez and Crystal Briscoe earned All-Freshman honors.
* In addition to first-team all-conference honors, Glowacz was a three-time C-USA Player of the Week and a South All-Region Second-Team selection in 2003.
* Houston will return all nine starters and 18 of 19 veterans next year.
