Charlotte, NC - Houston Softball Splits Series with Charlotte Fourty-Niners
Houston Softball split their two game series with Charlotte today losing 4-5 in the first game and finishing the day with the win 5-2. Jenny Johnson earned both the win and the loss for the Cougars making her 8-7 on the year.
Houston got off to a good start after the rain delayed play for an hour. The Cougars took the early lead the top of the second inning with the sixth homerun of the year by Jenilee Skender. Jaci Gonzales came up strong behind Skender with a double to left center. Both Michelle Keith and Brooke Johnson continued the inning with singles and racking up three total runs to lead the Niners.
In the top of the fifth inning Jeanie Davis added another homerun to her list, making it seven for the season and making the score 4-0.
Charlotte mounted their comeback in the sixth inning scoring two runs on hits by Lynne LaPorte and Kristy Constantino. Autumn Lawson and Denise Atmar also hit to reach base and were scored by a three run homer by Sam Moore, giving Charlotte the lead 5-4.
Houston was not able to counter the last minute efforts of the Niners and the Cougars took the loss 5-4.
The second game began again with Houston scoring the leading runs, but this game would have a much different ending. Houston scored their lead off batter, Jaci Gonzales on a ball hit by Kristen Glowacz to the third baseman to take the lead 1-0.
Charlotte tied up the score in inning two, when Atmar scored on a single by Lindsay Flemming. The score at the bottom of two, 1-1.
Houston took a solid lead (4-2) in the fourth scoring Ray Ferreris after she reached on a triple and Michelle Whipple scored on a hit by Gonzales.
Glowacz hit a homerun in the top of the fifth, to end the scoring by both teams and the final for game two of the three game series was Houston 5, Charlotte 2.
Jenny Johnson earns the win for the Cougars after throwing six strikeouts in 27 batters faced. She finished the day with a record of 8-7. The Cougars will resume play on Sunday, April 6 at 1:00pm.
