Cougar Softball Takes Game Three of Charlotte Series

Charlotte, NC - The Cougars held off the Niners on Charlotte 3-2 in game three of their Conference series today. Houston is now 26-17 overall and 8-4 in Conference USA play. Charlotte falls to 4-10 in Conference and 13-19 overall. Johnson took the win for the Cougars from the mound and is now 9-6 on the year.
Charlotte took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Mel Thevanote knocked a solo homerun out of centerfield. Charlotte kept that one run lead for four innings when, in the top of the fifth the Cougars punched out two runs. Ray Ferreris walked to reach base and was moved around by Michelle Whipple's hit (the first of the game for the Cougars). Lindsay Durham knocked a strategically timed double into center to score the two runners and give the Cougars their first lead of the game 2-1.
Houston added one insurance run in the top of the seventh, scoring Jenny Baker (running for Skender) on the second hit of the game for Michelle Whipple. Making the score 3-1.
Charlotte attempted a last minute effort for the win scoring Autumn Lawson on a hit by Sam Moore, but could not quite get that third run.
The final score in game three was 3-2 and the Cougars finish the series 2-1. The Cougar softball team will be back in action on April 12. They will host UAB in a conference series beginning at 1:00pm.
