HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team begins a busy week at 2 p.m., Tuesday as it plays host to Texas-San Antonio at Cougar Field.
The game was recently added to the Cougar schedule as a makeup contest for the team's Feb. 21 rainout at nationally-ranked LSU.
From there, the team travels to Waco, Texas, to meet 20th-ranked Baylor for the second time this season in Waco, Texas, on Wednesday and then play host again to Conference USA rival Louisville in three-game series at Cougar Field this weekend.
All four games can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with pre-game slated to begin about 15 minutes before first pitch. Fans also can view live stats at www.UHcougars.com by clicking on the "Gametracker" link on the Daily Calendar at the bottom of the main page.
The Cougars (25-19), winners of 17 of their last 23 games, come into the week after winning two of three at C-USA rival South Florida last weekend. UH had to overcome the Bulls in extra innings during each victory and erupted for six runs in the 10th inning Sunday to take a 12-7 win and claim the regular-season series in Tampa, Fla., for the first time since 1997.
Sophomore southpaw Brian Martin is expected to make his first start of the 2003 season against the Roadrunners. This year, the Texas City, Texas, native has appeared in four games, striking out three in two innings of work.
Junior infielder Cole Bruce led the Cougars offensively in four games last week, compiling a .562 batting average, amazing 1.125 slugging percentage and .556 on-base percentage to help lead the Cougars to three wins. He extended his hitting streak to a career-best seven consecutive games and rapped out three hits in each of the last two games at USF.
For that performance, he was honored as the C-USA Hitter of the Week for the first time in his career. It also was the Cougars' first C-USA offensive honor this season.
He was joined on the league's weekly honor roll by junior righthander Brad Sullivan, who was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week. Despite not receiving a decision last week, Sullivan collected the honor with another stellar performance at South Florida in the series opener.
The Nederland, Texas, native struck out 12 while allowing only one infield single on a close call in the sixth inning. It was the 11th double-digit strikeout game of his career.
Junior third baseman Hyung Cho continues to lead the Cougars in all Triple Crown categories with a .379 batting average, 10 home runs and 37 RBIs.
This will be the second straight season that the Cougars will host the Roadrunners. A year ago, UH took a 5-2 win on April 30 at Cougar Field. The Cougars own an 8-4 record against UTSA in the all-time series.
UTSA (23-24) comes into the non-conference affair after dropping the final two games of a Southland Conference series at Sam Houston State. Freshman shortstop Ryan Crew leads the Roadrunners with a .316 batting average, making him the only UTSA player above the .300 mark.
