NEW ORLEANS - Two of the premier programs in Conference USA renew their rivalry this weekend in an important three-game series.
The University of Houston baseball team, winner of 10 of its last 12 games, faces Tulane at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Turchin Stadium. The series continues at 2 p.m., Saturday before wrapping up at 1 p.m., Sunday.
The series can be heard live on KAXF 88.3 FM or over the Internet at www.UHcougars.com with pre-game slated to begin about 15 minutes before first pitch. Fans also can view live stats at www.UHcougars.com by clicking on the "Gametracker" link on the Daily Calendar at the bottom of the main page.
The Cougars (18-15, 9-3 C-USA) have finished first or second every year as a member of Conference USA for the last six seasons. Tulane had equaled that feat for the first five years before falling to fifth place in 2002.
Junior righthander Brad Sullivan makes his 11th start of the year in the series opener on Friday. Although he struggled some in his last outing against UAB last weekend, Sullivan continues to lead the team with 84 strikeouts and is poised to become the first pitcher in UH history to record back-to-back 100+-strikeout seasons.
The Nederland, Texas, native has recorded a 4-3 record, including wins in his last four decisions, and a 2.27 ERA.
Junior third baseman Hyung Cho continues to be the offensive leader for the Cougars and was a one-man wrecking crew in UH's 14-6 win at Southwest Texas State on Tuesday. The Toronto, Canada, native batted 4-for-5 with five runs, two homers, two doubles and four RBIs in the winning effort.
He tied UH single-game records with five runs and four extra-base hits and blasted two homers in one game for the second time this season.
Tulane (22-11, 6-6 C-USA) comes into the series on the heels of a 15-5 win over New Orleans on Wednesday night.
Brian Bogusevic (1-0, 0.00) is slated to make only his second start of the season in the series opener.
Michael Aubrey, the 2003 C-USA Preseason Player of the Year, has lived up to those expectations, leading the Green Wave with a .477 batting average, eight home runs and 46 RBIs.
This will be the seventh consecutive season that the Cougars and Green Wave have met on the diamond. UH owns a 14-12 all-time record against Tulane but is 4-7 in the Big Easy.
A year ago, the Cougars swept all four meetings against the Green Wave, with three during the regular season and one in the third round at the 2002 C-USA Tournament.
