HOUSTON - Although there are only two games remaining in the 2003 Silver Glove Series between the University of Houston and Rice University baseball teams, there is still plenty of action for fans off the field.
The two schools have challenged one another to see which university can donate more blood to the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center (GCBRC) from April 1 to April 16.
"The Houston Alumni Organization (HAO) is proud to participate in this friendly rivalry with the Association of Rice Alumni," said Steve Hall, president of HAO, which is co-sponsoring the event. "Regardless of who wins on the diamond, the Houston community will benefit when the Cougars and Owls support this critical drive for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. I challenge all Cougars to show that they really do 'bleed Cougar red' by donating at one of the designated UH campus or Blood Center locations."
During the Silver Glove Blood Drive from April 1-16, Cougar fans can donate at any of the GCRBC's sites around town, using the code #KO98 to credit the university. To locate a donation center, visit the GCRB Web site http://www.giveblood.org. All potential donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health without any cold or flu symptoms and have a valid picture ID.
There will also be three on-campus collection events at UH during the blood drive with the events running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. On April 2, GCRBC staffers will set up in the Cougar Den at the University Center. On April 10, it will be held at the Commons Area at Moody Towers. On April 15, the Athletics/Alumni Center will be the featured site.
Last year, the two schools faced off in a similar contest with the football teams during the Bayou Bucket Blood Drive and raised more than 440 units between them.
The 2003 Silver Glove Series resumes at 7 p.m., Tuesday in the final contest of the season at Reckling Park. The series finale will be held at 7 p.m., April 16 at Cougar Field.
