HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team swept the University of Texas at Arlington 4-1and 3-0 in a doubleheader Wednesday at the Cougar Softball Stadium. With the wins the Cougars improve to 22-12 overall and remain 6-0 in Conference USA.
The Lady Mavericks threatened early in game one as freshman Beverly Rowan singled to left field to score Melanie Williams, who reached on an error by shortstop Jaci Gonzalez earlier in the inning. UTA held on to the 1-0 lead until the fourth inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, junior outfielder Candis Turbo lined over the center field wall for her first home run of the year, a two-run shot to give Houston the 2-1 lead. The Cougars came alive again in the sixth inning as Jenilee Skender doubled to left field and Arelis Ferreris hit her fifth home run of the season to give Houston two insurance runs and a 4-1 lead.
Jamie Falco struck out two batters in the top of the seventh as the Cougars held onto the 4-1 win. Falco (10-4) allowed one run on five hits, struck out nine and faced 28 batters in her ninth complete game of the season. UTA's Katy Cox (13-4) allowed four runs on four hits, struck out six and walked five in the loss.
Turnbo and Ferreris led the Houston offense with two homeruns and two RBI a piece.
Both teams remained scoreless in game two as UTA picked up its only hit of the game on a Katie Singleton single in the second inning. Houston left four runners on base but junior hurler Jenny Johnson struck out eight Lady Mavericks over the first four innings to keep the UTA bats quiet.
The Houston offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning as Lindsay Durham reached on a fielder's choice and Gonzalez hit a single to right center to put two Cougars in scoring position. Turnbo walked to load the bases for Jeanie Davis, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Durham. Kristen Glowacz then tripled to right center, scoring both Gonzalez and Turbo to bring Houston up by three, 3-0.
UTA left two on base in the top of the seventh as the Cougars went on to a 3-0 victory to complete the non-conference doubleheader sweep.
Johnson (7-5) struck out 11 of the 25 batters she faced in her first one-hitter of the season. UTA's Jill Garro allowed seven hits in six innings of work to pick up her seventh loss of the year (6-7). Glowacz, a two-time Conference USA Hitter of the Week in 2003, went 3-3 in game two, pacing the Houston offense with two singles and a triple. Ferreris, Gonzalez and Skender each added a hit in the 3-0 win.
The Cougars will travel to Austin to face No. 4 Texas (22-4) tomorrow (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. at McCombs Field.
