HOUSTON - Despite a strong non-conference start and another winning season, the University of Houston women's basketball team was not among the seven Conference USA squads given NCAA Tournament bids or invitations to the WNIT this season. The Lady Cougars will finish the 2002-03 campaign with a 15-13 overall and 6-8 Conference USA record.
For just the second time in league history, five C-USA women's basketball teams have received invitations to the NCAA Tournament. Regular season champion Charlotte and C-USA Tournament champion TCU are joined by Cincinnati, DePaul and Tulane in this year's NCAA's.
Houston, the 2002 WNIT Runner-Up, made trips to the invitational the past two seasons. League rivals Marquette (15-3) and Saint Louis (17-13) each were invited to participate in this year's WNIT.
The Lady Cougars were led by junior Chandi Jones in 2002-03, who closed out the season with a nation-leading 27.5 points per game. The All-American guard is Houston's all-time leading female scorer and has totaled 1,965 points in 82 games as a Lady Cougar.
