Feb. 28, 2003
After the first day of competition in the 2003 Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the University of Houston Cougar men's and women's teams have shown that they are the teams to beat in this year's field, featuring women's teams from all 14 C-USA member schools and nine men's teams.
Houston, hosting the annual two-day meet for the third time since 1997 at the Yeoman Fieldhouse on the UH campus, posted victories in two of the combined 10 events scored (six women, four men) and placed in the top eight to score points in nine. The Houston women lead second place South Florida by one-half point, 43.5-43, while the Houston men trail first-place Southern Miss, 43-36.
Top performers for the Cougars included senior distance runner Mike Olague, who easily won the men's 5,000-meter run in a finishing time of 14:46.38, while Ashley George captured the women's long jump with a career-best and Cougar season-best jump of 5.93 meters (19-5.5 feet).
The Cougar women racked up 17 points in the pentathlon event, thanks to strong finishes by Krystal Ward (second), Briana Bassler (third), Nichole Brundage (seventh) and Lindsay Cobbs (eighth).
For the men, freshman Clayton Cretors posted a career and season best in clearing 1.96 meters (6-5.0 feet) in the high jump to take second place. Meanwhile, Jason Edwards (7.50 meters), Brandon Bray (7.42 meters) and Brandon Womack (7.01 meters) placed second, fourth and eighth, respectively, in the men's long jump.
With only 10 events scored thus far, the conference meet continues tomorrow, March 1, with the final three events of the men's heptathlon as well as final heats of the women's and men's 60-meter hurdles, 400-meter, 60-meter dashes, 800-meter runs and 200-meter dashes. A full schedule of events follows.
