HOUSTON - The Lady Cougar basketball team will look to secure its place in next week's Conference USA Tournament with a win over South Florida (7-18, 2-10 C-USA) Friday night. Houston (13-12, 4-8 C-USA) will tip off against the Bulls at Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion at 7 p.m.
After dropping five of their last eight games, the Lady Cougars must regroup in time for postseason competition with the C-USA Tournament kicking off Thursday in Memphis, Tenn. Houston is currently tied for 11th place in the league and is only one win away from being guaranteed a trip to Memphis.
The Lady Cougars are coming off their first conference road victory of the season, a 53-52 win over Southern Miss in Hattiesburg. Houston is led by All-American Chandi Jones (5-10, G), who currently holds the nation's top scoring spot (27.4 ppg) and is averaging 7.9 rebounds and 3.5 steals per contest.
Jones is just 77 points away from surpassing Sharion Higgins's 1,927 mark to become Houston's all-time leading female scorer. She is currently fourth (1,881 points) behind Elvin Hayes, Otis Birdsong and Michael Young on the school's all-time list.
South Florida had its two game win streak snapped Sunday with a 71-60 loss to East Carolina. Junior Sarah Lochmann led the way for the Bulls with 18 points, followed closely by Alana Tanksley with 14, including four treys in the second half. The Bulls notched the biggest C-USA upset of the season on Feb. 21, defeating conference-leading Charlotte, 69-59 at home.
Friday's game will be broadcast on radio KGBC-AM 1540.
The Lady Cougars will play their final regular season game Sunday against UAB. Designated Senior Day, seniors Angela Curl and the recently-reinstated Lashinda Winters will be honored in their last appearances at Hofheinz Pavilion. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
