SAN MARCOS, Texas---Junior Arelis Ferreris scored on a passed ball in the top of the eighth inning, and junior pitcher Jenny Johnson shut down Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the bottom half of the extra frame, as the Cougars rallied for a 5-4 win today over the Islanders on Day Two to the Southwest Texas/CenturyTel Softball Classic.
The Cougars are now 1-3 on the year and conclude the weekend tournament with a noon contest against Texas Tech on Sunday.
Houston jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Ferreris and sophomore Jeanie Davis each drove in a run. The Islanders countered in their half of the first, when Katie Evans slugged a two-run homerun after UH freshman pitcher Crystal Briscoe got the first two TAMUCC hitters out.
In the second the Cougars and Briscoe were victimized by the long ball again, when Kesty Meitner drilled another two-run shot again after the young UH hurler was able to get the first two Islanders out. Briscoe was replaced by Johnson to begin the third, and the Cougar ace shut down A&M-Corpus Christi over the next six innings.
UH's bats were silent for four innings before Davis brought the Cougar fans to their feet when she drilled a Dani Damel fastball over the left-center fence. The two-run poke, which also plated Ferreris, tied the game at 4-4, setting up the extra inning heroics.
In the Cougars first game of the day, junior pitcher Jamie Falco rebounded from her rough outing the day before, holding Oregon to just one run after seven innings; however, in the extra frame the Ducks were able to get the run they needed when Jennifer Poore knocked in pinch runner Amber Hutchinson who was placed on second base under international rules. The Ducks prevailed 2-1.
The only Cougar run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when sophomore Kim Nesloney walked to open the inning. After sophomore Kristen Glowacz sacrificed Nelsoney to second, Ferreris responded with a run-scoring double to right center.
