HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Houston tennis team was in action at a couple different tournaments last weekend.
While several players stayed at home for the Cougar Fall Classic played the John E. Hoff tennis courts, two Cougars traveled to Malibu, California to participate in the Riviera All American qualifying tournament.
In singles play Miranda Foley took on Carolina Ramirez, the No. 1 players from Auburn University, dropping a close match 6-4, 6-3. Foley Broke serve to go up 1-0 in game one, but dropped four straight games to go down 1-4.
Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said the difference in the match was unforced errors, which prevented Foley from capitalizing on the opportunities she had.
In doubles play, Foley paired with Biljana Dimovska to take on Jemima Hayworth and Erin Polowski from Boise State. Dimovska and Foley broke serve immediately, but could not hold on for the win, falling 8-4.
While Dimovska and Foley were in California, Hanaa Rhazi was dominating her flight at the Cougar Fall Classic, taking first place, beating Megan Schmulbach of North Texas, Seva Iwinski of Texas A&M and Nichole Fintell of New Mexico State.
Assistants coach John Severance said Rhazi played well over the weekend, and is continuing to get better.
"She played really well," he said. "Any time you win three matches in a row, you are playing pretty good tennis. She still has a long way to go to be where we want her to be, but she did really well.
Kami Miller also had a solid showing, taking third place in her flight with a final round win over Texas Tech's Katja Kovicic. Sandra Blajer finished in seventh place in her flight with a final round win over Gillian Derksen of Texas State.
The Cougars will be in action again when hey travel to Fort Worth to play in the Southwest Regional Tournament October 17 through 20.
