HOUSTON - Led by All-American guard Chandi Jones, the University of Houston women's basketball team will look to extend its home win streak to five with a victory over Alabama in a Saturday doubleheader with the men's squad at Hofheinz Pavilion. The women will tip off against the Tide at 2 p.m. and the men will face Louisiana Lafayette at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Cougars (7-3) are coming off a 87-74 New Year's Eve victory over Texas A&M and a Dec. 20 upset over No. 20 Georgia. This year's Houston squad is 2-1 against SEC opponents, defeating Florida and No. 20 Georgia and losing to No. 13 Mississippi State.
The all-time series is tied between the teams with each squad using its home court advantage to make the series 1-1. The Lady Cougars have not defeated Alabama (10-2) since Dec. 2, 1989, when Houston prevailed 71-51 at Hofheinz.
The Tide is coming off a 62-57 win Monday over Saint Peters in the Holiday Classic in Jersey City, N.J. Senior center Jamilah Johns continues to be an offensive threat for Alabama, leading the squad in rebounding (9.1) and scoring with 13.9 points per game. Rick Moody is in his 13th year at the helm and is 1-0 against the Lady Cougars.
Jones, the 2002 Conference USA Player of the Year, currently leads the league and is third in the nation in scoring with 28.2 points per game.
